India are currently playing Sri Lanka at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala in the third and final T20I of the ongoing series between the two sides. The Blues have won the first two games of the series and if they win tonight as well, it would be an absolute whitewash. India captain Rohit Sharma put in a terrific performance both as captain and with the bat. But more important than that, he broke an unbreakable record and thus made history.
Rohit Sharma has been one of the most important players in the Indian senior team for quite some time now in all formats. He is one of the best not only in India but in the whole world. According to the ICC rankings, he is currently 6th in Test Cricket, 3rd in ODI and 11th in T20I, which says a lot about his current form.
But what Rohit Sharma is best known for is his brilliant captaincy abilities. Rohit made his captaincy debut with the IPL Mumbai Indians franchise in 2013 and won the title with them in his first season as captain. The rest is, as they say, history.
He has won 5 IPL trophies with Mumbai Indians, the most in IPL history, and doesn’t seem to have any plans to stop just yet. The closest to him is Mahendra Singh Dhoni with 4 IPL trophies. But considering their age difference, Rohit will play for many more years as Dhoni’s days as captain are numbered.
Well, the Indian captain has once again proven his consistency at international level by becoming the most capped player in T20I history. He has now played 125 T20 international matches which is the highest ever. Previously, the record was held by Pakistani Shoaib Malik.
Here is a list of the most capped players in the T20I:-
- Rohit Sharma (India) – 125 games
- Shoaib Malik (Pakistan) – 124 games
- Mohammad Hafeez (Pakistan) – 119 games
- Eoin Morgan (England) – 115 games
- Mahmudullah (Bangladesh) – 113 games
Looking at the other players on this list, it can be estimated that Rohit will hold this record for quite a while until other players emerge. But it will take a long time.
Rohit Sharma made his T20I debut for India in 2007 and has been consistently at the top for over 15 years now. He deserves a lot of respect and appreciation for that.
